Creative Therapy

A therapy that uses a creative approach

Creative therapy is a therapeutic approach that integrates various creative and expressive arts into the therapeutic process. Creative therapy can include art therapy, music therapy, dance therapy, drama therapy, and play therapy, among others. The primary goal of creative therapy is to help clients access their emotions, thoughts, and behaviours through the use of creative expression.

As an artist and musician, I have experienced first hand the transformative power of creative expression. This has ignited my fascination with creative therapies, as they harness the inherent healing qualities of art, music, and other expressive mediums. Witnessing how these modalities facilitate emotional exploration and personal growth fuels my dedication to integrating creativity into therapeutic practices.

As a counsellor, I would use creative therapy as an adjunct approach to traditional talking therapy. I believe that the creative arts can provide a unique opportunity for clients to explore their inner world in a nonverbal and experiential way. Creative therapy can help clients access and process emotions that may be difficult to express verbally.

During a creative therapy session, I would provide the necessary materials and tools for the client to engage in creative expression. I would encourage the client to create art, music, or movement that reflects their inner experience. As a counsellor, I would facilitate the creative process and provide a safe and supportive environment for the client to express themselves freely.

Through creative therapy, clients can gain insight into their emotions, thoughts, and behaviours. Creative therapy can also help clients develop coping skills, increase self-awareness, and improve their overall well-being. As a counsellor, I would incorporate creative therapy into the therapeutic process based on the client’s individual needs and goals.

In conclusion, creative therapy is a therapeutic approach that integrates various creative and expressive arts into the therapeutic process. Creative therapy can help clients access and process emotions that may be difficult to express verbally. As a counsellor, I would use creative therapy as an optional approach to traditional talking therapy to facilitate the client’s exploration and expression of their inner world.
